Azerbaijan, the “Land of Fire,” is famous for its rich history, futuristic skyline, and… kitesurfing? Yes! Sitting on the Caspian Sea, this country offers surprisingly good conditions for kitesurfers looking for uncrowded spots and steady winds. Plus, where else can you kite near mud volcanoes and ancient petroglyphs?

The prime kitesurfing season in Azerbaijan runs from May to October, with the best wind conditions between June and September. The Caspian Sea delivers steady thermal winds ranging from 12 to 25 knots, making it ideal for freeride and freestyle sessions. The water temperature is comfortable in summer, but outside of peak season, you might want a thin wetsuit unless you enjoy a brisk dip.

An hour from Baku, Shuraabad – this is Azerbaijan’s kitesurfing hotspot. With shallow, flat water and reliable wind, it’s perfect for beginners and freestyle riders. Plus, it’s so uncrowded you might only have the occasional curious local herder watching you ride.

Located on the Absheron Peninsula, Bilgah Beach, this spot offers choppier waters and stronger winds, ideal for those who like a challenge. It’s also close to some of Baku’s fancy beach clubs, so you can go from kiting to sipping cocktails in record time.

Nabran – If you’re up for an adventure, head to this northern coastal region. A mix of sandy beaches and lush forests makes for an incredible setting, and while the wind isn’t as consistent, the scenery more than makes up for it.

Kitesurfing in Azerbaijan is still relatively under the radar, which means plenty of space, steady wind, and a chance to explore a country that blends East and West. And if you ever need a break, you can always check out Baku’s flame-shaped skyscrapers, eat some plov, and pretend you’re a Silk Road trader.
